  The Tuna Chase Tournament

--------------

The Saltwater Flyfishers Association of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, is now starting to gear up again for the annual "Longtail Tuna Chase".

This highly celebrated Tournament is held on the beautiful Sunshine Coast - a hugely popular tourist destination 1 hours drive north of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

The Sunshine Coast has regular flights to Maroochydore from major Australian cities bringing national and international tourists alike to play on our clean, white sandy beaches; enjoy beautiful countryside and crafts in the adjoining hinterland or enjoy alfresco dining on Mooloolaba, Noosa or Caloundra Esplanades, being treated to some of the best views you could possibly find.

To the angler who fishes saltwater fly, the attraction is the vast number of waterways the Sunshine Coast has to offer, allowing the angler to test their skills against a wide variety of sport fish in an equally wide variety of stunning and sometimes raw environments.

To many flyfishers, the premier sportfish in these parts is the northern Blue Fin Tuna, otherwise known as the "Longtail Tuna". A Longtail Tuna on fly is a huge milestone for any angler, but for those fishing saltwater fly the challenge is 10 fold compared to conventional tackle, and once you start pursuing these extraordinary fish you soon realise that what we have here is absolute world class fishing - without doubt.

And the good news is that every year around early Autumn through to sometimes as late as mid Winter, these fish abound in huge schools, feasting on millions of baitfish that appear off our coast only 500 metres off the beach at Mooloolaba.

The "Longtail Tuna Chase" is based out of the port of Mooloolaba at the facilities of the Mooloolaba Yacht Club. Mooloolaba is recognised as being one of the best and safest ports on the east coast of Australia, because the bay is sheltered from predominant winds experienced at this time of year; the Tournament can be fished from 4 metre tiller steer boats, in fact many previous tournament winners have fished out of such boats.

The Tournament runs for 3 days and is a fantastic way for all keen flyfishers of all levels of experience to get together and learn plenty from other anglers on fly patterns; techniques etc, and more importantly enjoy the challenge and thrill of catching and releasing the mighty Longtail Tuna.
