Question,
Can
I use a normal fly reel.
The
answers.
Like
all fly rods and reels, the reel must match the rod however
in the case of the Double Overhead rod and saltwater fishing
you will require a bigger reel, because of the backing required,
the running/hauling line and then the Shooting Head or Scandinavian
type of Head.
The
size and or weight of the reel isn't a problem with Double
Rods because weight is a postive factor in Rod balance.
Rod
Balance
This
single item is the most important thing in making casting
and rod handling friendly and fun. Balance also increases
line speed by allowing the rod tip to move freely and if
it is allowed to move freely it can be made to move fast.
The
balance should be 'just a bit' tip heavy, if your rods isn't
balanced it is quite acceptable to add lead and tape this
into position around the reel seat. This little additional
weight can change dramatically how a rod feels and handles.
When
purchasing your new rod, insist upon adding your reel and
line to check the balance and or ask how the rod is balance
with, what ever reel and line you intend to cast with.
Then
enter the exciting new World of Overhead Casting with a
real rod, a big rod, a Double Overhead Rod. Where you will
like most people ask, why didn't I do this years ago ?
Question
Leader
length
The
answers.
Very
generally, a leader equal to your rods length is idea, however
this can change with the fly size, as an example a smaller
fly, a longer leader and a larger leader a shorter leader.
To
start your learning process a 'average' size fly and leader
equal to the rod's length is the best selection.
Question.
Are
small boats, 4 meters/12 foot suitable for fishing a long
Overhead rod from?
The
answers.

yes !
