Double Handed Rods for Overhead Casting - Talon D/H Leaders and design

And how to make you own Double Handed Leaders for Overhead Casting

Talon Double Handed Rod Leaders for Overhead Casting and how to make yours, yes we also sell the Leaders in lengths 10, 15 and 20 foot. These Leaders can and do 'work' for standard Spey Casting also.

Leaders for Double Handed Rods casting Overhead, we want a leader that is super streamlined, without knots and can roll over a fly way out, remember we are chasing casts of 150 foot. Yes, they are also suitable for 100 foot casts.

Sadly there isn't a suitable leader produced in a tapered form. And to overcome this problem we have designed and developed our own unique shape and taper, a taper that rolls over way out at 150 feet, a taper that can roll over 2 x 100mm flies at 120 feet without a problem. Or a single fly way out at 150 foot.

The secret trick, no, its not really a secret at all, everybody should know, is to have the butt section of the leader as close to the same diameter as the end of your fly line. Even if the tip section of the fly line/head is equal to about 150lbs line diameter. The reason for this matching diameters is to transfer energy smoothly from one to the other, if the transfer is smooth the roll over with also be smooth. Therefore the matching should be used even on 2w fly lines. Correctly balanced it will appear that the fly pulls over beautifully, even at 150feet where your fly is hard to see..

The largest diameter produced by commercial tippet manufactures is nowhere large enough.

This fact is a opportunity for a specialist fly fishing product group like Talon who can produce small number of hand made leaders.

Available are Double Handed Rod Leaders designed for Overhead Casting in the following lengths,
TDHL 10 - 10 foot, with 4feet of 100lb butt section, 4ft of 40lb and 30lb tippet.
TDHL 15 - 15foot, with 5feet of 100lb butt section, 5ft of 40lb, 3ft of 30lb and 20lb tippets
TDHL 20 - 20foot, with 5feet 100lb butt section, 6ft of 40lb, 6ft of 30lb and 20lb tippets
With all the above a tippet section in a smaller size can be added.

And for large or 2 or more flies we recommend the leader with the 150lb butt section in the following,
TDHL3 10 - 10 foot with 3feet of 150lb butt section, 3ft of 100lb, 2ft of 40lb and 30lb tippet
TDHL3 15 - 15foot with 3feet of 150lb butt section, 3ft of 100lb, 3ft of 40lb, 3ft of 30lb and 20lb tippet
With all the above a tippet section in a smaller size can be added using your prefered tippet or shock tippet material.

Please note, Its important. The first 3 sections are built using hard mono material, this acts like a spring and helps roll over your fly.

Do you have a special requirement, feel free to email your request.

The show and tell Section. So you too can select to make your own Overhead leader.

Because a loop in 100 or 150 pound Breaking Strain monofilament is truly nasty to produce, a smooth loop knot or joint impossible we use 50 pound braided monofilament to form a loop, this then makes a smooth fine loop that isn't wide open during casting catching air and therefore producing drag, the fine loop also won't catch on objects like a horrible wide loop.

Each change in monofilament size.
Arrange the two different sizes of mono side by side , 50mm / 2inches each, so they appear parallel, bind with clear mono thread and apply small drop of Super glue at each end, only.

Now cut a section of the monofilament braid 60mm long and slide over the parallel line section.

Bind with clear monofilament ONLY on one end, 12mm /1/2 inch, apply a small drop of Super glue to the bond section, allow to dry, then pull down the braid till tight over the total length of the joint, bind the free end again, the same way as the first end, apply another drop of Super glue and allow to dry.

The life of these bound joints is in excess of 100 hours from our testing.
