8 Final Forward cast, the shooting cast

This cast with an Overhead rod is called a 'shot'.

Having completed the back cast and released line then drifted the rod backwards, apply a steady and gentle, but firm movement forward.

This movement must be accelerating. Then, as your arm is starting to reach out, start to lift the rod up your stomach only slightly at first and still pressed against your body.

The rod will reach a angle of about 30degrees, however this angle will depend on the caster's comfort and feel. At this point release the running line.

Then as the released running line starts to slow down. Start to lift the rod higher and decrease the tip's angle, till the angle is now about 15 degrees or less.

Here the rod can be pushed slightly forward. This action decreases the entry angle to the first stripper guide allowing a free flow of line into this guide. The reduction of angle reduces the line's harmonic wave bounce between the number 1 and 2 stripper guides.

This movement will decrease the harmonic wave throughout all the rod's guide system, as this wave consumes energy that reduces the line speed, which in turn decreases the casting distance. Therefore, we will wish to reduce this wave as much as possible.

The 'about' 30 degree angle, this angle will depend on the caster's feel of load and the release point.

The running line is slowing down, start to drop the rod tip.

From here you should be looking at your first 100feet plus cast. Distance casting with a Double Handed Overhead rod is quick and easy.

A badly designed LMD can or could cost you your life!

Stripping Basket safety. The most important consideration in the design of any Stripping basket is safety, which is normally the last or never written about subject.

A badly designed LMD can or could cost you your life!

What is required are quick release clips that you can release without looking or thinking 'where is'. These must be where your hand will naturally fall, that is close to you side, NOT behind your back or somewhere else that's uncomfortable to reach.

If you cast with your right hand, the hand holding the fly rod, then the release clip will be required on the left hand side of the basket, as close to the basket as possible, where it can be easily found.

The release clip must be large enough to be easily found and uncoupled / released very quickly, even with cold wet hands.

The reason why the LMD must be released or removed for your body is it can fill with water and no matter how many holes there are or what size the holes are, they cannot release or drop the water fast enough! Think what could happen if you slipped and fell over into deep water or a wave suddenly rose up in front of you and then dumped into your basket.

Well, this situation is totally frightening. I had a wave rise in front of me, once, it arrived out of no where, crashed into me, filled the stripping basket and then proceeded to then pull me down with the sudden weight of the water, down I went onto my knees, while this was happening the ocean was trying to take me out with it.

Then I released the quick release clip, and then, only then, could I stand upright and make my way to safety. I never thought it could happen to me. This same situation can happen to anyone at any time, without warning!
