I’ve tried and tried the Southport Seaway, time and time again for Tailor, however none love me.

As late June and the first week of July are the ideal times for Bass on their winter saltwater run in our area the mind must turn to Bass.

So thats all of Tailor fishing for a few weeks for me, its now big beautiful Bass time !

Tonight, the clouds in the sky were clearing and a rather fresh SEaster pumping away, so me thinks, no need for a rain coat, the strong wind will keep any rain away, well that was just a silly dumb idea as just on dark the rain poured out of the sky in bucket loads !

Leaving home at 4.45pm today and returned home at 7.30pm, with the time in between filled by the best Bass fishing I’ve had ever, and my first Bass adventure started in 1962 or 63, something like that.

The story,

first fish a nice 38cm came in, in full sunlight as did the next Bass

Well 2 nice little Bass at well over 35cm, its a nice afternoon.

Then as darkness arrived, so did the lousy rain ! And thoughts of getting wet again we racing through my head when the fly line pulled tight ! And even though I dared to all the pressure I was brave to do on the Talon Double, the WMD 7/8W 12Footer, the Bass just increased her speed and power, and away she went straight into the xxxx .(telling this just might tell too much :) )

Fly lost, the Bass won, and this happened a total of 3 times during the endless rain that in the end soaked me, enough to leave the Bass for another day. Results, lost 3 big fish, I have seen two big fish caught and released, of course from about the same area, one of 62 and the other girl a 63cm fish. In turn I grassed a total of 10fish, with two being close to 40cm, and all the remainer at plus 40, including a big fat girl at 49.5cm.

Some boring Bass photos for you, sorry but they are the best I could during the rain, and fearing the camera would drown.

And as darkness arrived the bigger fish came out to play

Just checked the camera, its dry and ready for tonights fun, which will include wearing a raincoat, even with the sky clear !

I wonder how many fly fishers never get to fish, hot looking locations like the one where the Bass live due to there is only about 2 meters of back cast area available at most, where as Double Hander really shines, couple this to a powerful Underhand cast and you blast your fly out into Bass home range.

Back once more to the Seaway, conditions are ideal, and not even a touch for even small Tailor/Bluefish, and I saw no one catch a thing, not even a poor Bream, guess thats another 3 hours wasted, or to be positive, another 3 hours of casting practice.

A giant positive for the evening, a magical sunset,

This evening saw me once more, another time, again, etc fishing the Southport Seaway walls into the south with my Talon WMD Double, 7/8w and 12 foot rod and this resulted in two nice Tailor in the plus 4 pound range hooked however both bl….dy fish just hit the rocks on the way up as a wave smashed onto the rocks and the result was they there released !

This is the last day of fishing for this holiday.

During the morning I dropped 4 nice fish.

The afternoon saw 2 Browns at 46cm and a 43 came to the net. and dropped 3 other fish while the river was dropping.

And that ends a rather nice holiday, now back home and to work.

Here I would like to take all those customers who sat still and waited for their Order while I was enjoying a great holiday.

Some random images from the holiday.

We are going home and these are the take-away fish after about 180 caught and mainly releasedFurther up riverThe River in full flow

The river has risen over 2 foot from yesterday and now racing to fill the Lake, The morning fish, nothing, not even a strike, even though at time my fly was bumping along the bottom.

This afternoon the flow had eased slightly, and this seemed to enable the fish to decide to feed, 2 rainbows one 42 and the other a 46cm fish

and 4 strikes from Browns, how do I know they were Browns because when they jumped or boiled the water I saw them all, them all as they threw the hook.

Then along came Steve, a different Steve to the one at Middlingbank, and there besides me caught a beautiful Brown fish, its wonderful to watch other people cast and nail a fish, as Steve was just develping his Down and Across fishing skills and had added the ever so slight life like movement to the fly in this kind of fishing and now it had paid super results, there in his hands.

There you go, this Dunny has the best view in Australia ! There is the River right below the Dunny on the plain

As the holiday is coming quickly to an end, its time to take in all the fishing possible, so back again to the Eucumbene River, today.

And now back to fishing, the river is up and still rising while I fish, and running very dirty.

Result only one fish saw the net a beautifully coloured Brown of 60cm, which was release to enjoy his once a year sexual adventure,

Talon 2wXF model rod at work, who said 2w's were tigs, silly people !

We have decided to visit Thredbo village and the high country beyond Persiher Valley with friends that had come down from Canberra.

Fishing this afternoon with Phil, the master glue man, result a great way to spend an afternoon into the sun set but not a touch and with seeing only a couple of very small fish, we were not too thrilled.

I did give a fellow a cast with the mighty little Trout Spey rod, and he discovered it was a wee bit harder, and needed maybe a wee bit more skill required than he thought at first, why, Spey casting looks beautiful and sooooo easy. Just maybe thats the reason why some casters are uneasy about casting a Double, it looks almost too easy, but requires a skill level they haven’t mastered — yet.

This morning an early am trip to Thredbo River, yes there were a number of Browns waiting to move up stream, come some rain or a flush in the river, now they are just sitting there in the current, the largest fish seen was a male about 4 pound,

This afternoon, the Lake for nothing, except one hook-up that lasted seconds, night time fishing, no, its was too cold and I am too old to go by myself.
