This morning broke with a blasting wind coupled with black clouds racing in filling the sky, a mean day is coming as it looks like at any minute there will be heavy rain.

By afternoon its raining by the bucket full. This is truely a nean day !

But the positive notice is, the meaner the day the more the Browns come out for a feed, increasing the chances of me hooking one or more.

9 Fish came in this afternoon, with one at 25cm the others all plus 40cm or more, with one fish at 45cm.

3 Browns were included in the score today. On the way back to camp, a Doe, a female Sambar crossed in front of me, truely a wonderful creature and something all people in this country should enjoy, the beauty of a wild deer.

A trip to out around Mitchell, Queensland out about in the general North West area, about over 180ks from town, in the middle of no where.

And this area is just too far from anywhere for most people, an area covered in rotten feral creatures, an area that only ever sees a couple of hunters a year, that help try and control the numbers while the poor farm tries his best to make a dollar .

The place has so many pigs, cats, goats, rabbits its a barrel running hot day and night.

Speaking of night time, wave a spot light around and you will see so many cats you will think your in the local Council Pound ! Big shining eyes everywhere ! Eyes that are constantly looking for beautiful birds !

That is till they see the flash, and then they see no more.

A couple of the cats removed and a local pig about to go to the long sleep, forever.

How many ferals were removed, we didn’t even count as there were creatures everywhere !

One silly cat that thought it smart to wander around in broad daylight, silly cat.

A pig about to go to sleep,

Sleep time coming for Mr Cranky Pig

Another huge cat, the other side isn’t real pretty as the 300winny mag’s flash was the last thing he saw.

Another huge cat, removed from the wild, what was left of the skin has made great fly dubbing.

No fishing today or this evening.

Today was a time to share, we went for a long lunch with a dear friend who had just lost her husband, a wonderful fishing and hunting friend. A friend that I’ve walked miles with and shared adventures with from being caught in a rain storm to being almost cooked by the sun, from Sambar to Red Deer and all in between.  Something that can never be replaced, a friend who could do anything.

If you are gifted with a friend like this, say thanks mate, for no reason as the day will arrive without warning where your mind will scream, why didn’t I say say thanks once or twice.

We had a wonderful lunch and a glass or two of wine and came home rather late, so fishing here.

Yesterday a friend up the Coast a little way, caught a 19pound Tailor / Bluefish to some people, from the surf which indicates there are some Tailor still about, but why don’t they arrive on the Northern Gold Coast ???????

Theres the good news for today,

And here is the sicko news today. There is a little Saltwater FlyFishing Forum here in Australia, that think they are somewhat special.

And members once again went on the attack, attacking myself, personally. Why, maybe you could ask poor Dazz as he runs this Forum.

And now the strange part, I have only ever meet one of  these childish name calling people.  And that was years ago.  I don’t want ANYTHING to do with this group of negative people who ‘talk’ all about fishing and they are real good at the talk !

May I suugest to those resonsible,  that your threatening posts on the Saltwater fly fishing forum amounts to cyber bullying and intimidation and is a highly illegal offence.

And now on a happy brighter note, a set of Wet and Spider flies. That cast with ease from your Trout Spey Double.

Last night nothing, and once more fished the Seaway for a possible Jewfish in a number of locations.

How many times I’ve fished that place to not even a touch !

Then today a friend Kruger took two beautiful Salmon in the Seaway from a boat.

And he was using his Talon Trout Spey, 5/6w 12 footer, which according to the so called experts in this country when it comes to fly fishing is almost impossible ! (once I wondered about the so called experts on fly fishing in this country, but I wonder no more as their talk, is just that, cheap talk only for the sake of making a noise)

The little Talon Trout Spey was never designed for 68cm long Salmon, however it, the the little Double works like a magic stick beating up the rocket jumping  fish ! And of course they were easy to land even from a boat (take notice so called experts, you don’t have much trouble landing fish with a 12 foot Double from a boat, well you might but most people don’t ! )

During this last week, the adventure to try and capture a Jewfish has taken place, but I have failed !

Even with the rain producing a fresh in the river system and then down into the Seaway, nothing not a touch no matter how many times I cast, from new locations and from the old locations , with fishing from the surface to the bottom, and all that happen was the lost of a number of flies to the botton.

Then last night, a beautiful evening as the sun started to set, a silly little Trevor attacked my popper fly, how he even got his mouth around the 130mm long fly is beyond me. This poor lost little fish was only about 300mm long and was sent straight back to his Mother.

130mm Popper, do you cast Poppers this size on your 7w fly rod ? When using a Double you can.

Beautiful sunset, but no fish

The Eastern end of the Seaway, where big fish should be living but nothing

No fishing today, as we have people coming over and then out for dinner.

And in the place of a fishing Report, a thought or two about fly vises.

Have you ever noticed how most of the people with the vises that cost the most, rarely fish and their flies are just avarage ?

And these same people will tell you how wonderful their fly vise is AND how much it cost.

Well folks my fly vise would be a joke to these people.

This is it, a PIN Vise. This was purchase back in 1962, I think, or there abouts however it was before 1963.

The PIN Vise was threaded and placed on a 6mm steel shalf, why because back in the early 60′s a fly vise was almost never heard of, let alone found in any stores that carry fly tying gear. Did you know back in the early 60′s there was only three locations in Sydney where you could buy anything to do with fly fishing.

And today I still tie on this old vise, how many flies its helped to construct, I couldn’t even dream, but there would be a few, you could say. Today, this vise is used only for Trout flies with hooks under # 8′s.

Anything larger or for saltwater applications with their generally larger hooks is tied on my new Veniard full Rotary fly vise which must be the best, the greatest value in fly vises today.

The old PIN Vise still going strong after about 50 years, shown here with a # 16 Caddis nymph.

And the best value Fly Vise avaiable today, the Veniard Fully Adjustable Rotary for only au$125.00 or as a full and complete Fly Tying kit at only $145.00

Back again to the Seaway, why with the strong Westerly winds today, the Tailor should be close to the shoreline and behind the Tailor could or should be the Jewfish, in theory.

Wonderful conditions, but not a Tailor to be found, however there were numbers of little Tervors about 350mm long, and 8 of these little fellows saw my fly and wished they hadn’t. As thats all there appeared to be there, after 8 little fish, I gave up and came home early.

Tonight saw me trying to locate the Jewfish, as the tide ran in, where :)

Result, lost two flies to the bottom and not even a touch from anything, in fact I saw nothing.

BUT I did see something that wasn’t nice.

There they were two males and one female that looked like people from Korea.

Now this rather clever trio had as I watched, had a small gas burner and dish filled with stock cooking away and as the rather small Bream came in, a quick fillet job and straight into the stock and then 3 sets of chopsticks were set into action.

All trance of the unlucky little Bream vanished down their throats. All gone without any trance !

A rather clever way to beat being caught with under sized fish ! EXCEPT one old grumpy fly fisherman saw the clever act and this resulted in a phone call to the nice Fisheries people the next morning and ……… the location is too close to the Fisheries office not to be checked on a regular basis.

An Trout image from back in May in the mountains, the rod is a Talon USA 2w 7′ 6″ XF model Cairnton and the line a Talon W/F.
